چکیده

of computer music systems based on AI techniques: (1) compositional, (2) improvisational, and (3) performance systems. Representative examples of each type are briefly described. Then, we look in more detail at the problem of endowing the resulting performances with the expressiveness that characterizes human-generated music. This is one of the most challenging aspects of computer music that has been addressed just recently. The main problem in modeling expressiveness is to grasp the performer’s “touch,” that is, the knowledge applied when performing a score. Humans acquire it through a long process of observation and imitation. For this reason, previous approaches, based on following musical rules trying to capture interpretation knowledge, had serious limitations. An alternative approach, much closer to the observation-imitation process observed in humans, is that of directly using the interpretation knowledge implicit in examples extracted from recordings of human performers instead of trying to make explicit such knowledge. In the last part of the article, we report on a performance system, SAXEX, based on this alternative approach, that is capable of generating high-quality expressive solo performances of jazz ballads based on examples of human performers within a case-based reasoning (CBR) system.

Comper: towards a Model for Generating Compositions from Expressive Music performances

We introduce the concept of Expressive Performance Generated Composition where the initial specification for a composition comes from the details of an expressive performance. This expressive performance may have been of a previous piece or be specially produced for the composition. The expressive deviations in the performance are used to generate a meaningful interpretation of the performance ...

Playing with Cases: Rendering Expressive Music with Case-Based Reasoning*

■ This paper surveys long-term research on the problem of rendering expressive music by means of AI techniques with an emphasis on Case-Based Reasoning. Following a brief overview discussing why people prefer listening to expressive music instead of non-expressive synthesized music, we examine a representative selection of well-known approaches to expressive computer music performance with an e...

An Instance Based Model for Generating Expressive Performance during Composition

We detail our work on a multi-agent model for the generation of structurally expressive music performance. It is a combined performance and composition system which attempts to implement the common observation in expressive music performance studies that performers slow down at boundaries in a musical piece, with the amount of slowing down being larger when the boundary is more significant. Bec...

The Synergy of Music Theory and Al: Learning Multi-Level Expressive Interpretation

The paper presents genuinely interdisciplinary research in the intersection of AI (machine learning) and Art (music). We describe an implemented system that learns expressive interpretation of music pieces from performances by human musicians. This problem, shown to be very diicult in the introduction, is solved by combining insights from music theory with a new machine learning algorithm. Theo...
